More than 3,000 people signed a petition to save the Billingshurst Household Waste and Recycling Centre – and it worked! West Sussex Tories have now backed off from their threat to close two of the County’s Recycling Centres. A huge ‘Thank you’ to everyone who helped.
The moment I heard the proposal, I realised that Billingshurst tip would probably be one of the victims. Closure would have meant worsening queues and extra travel time for local residents. Hardly the right step in the current climate change era! This well-run Recycling Centre is a vital piece of infrastructure for the village and surrounding areas.
Closing two tips would have put unsustainable pressure on the remaining nine. Horsham’s Hop Oast site in particular is already suffering from severe congestion. The County Council has been forced to ask people to think first before they go there, so that was another factor in my concerns.
It wouldn’t even have saved much money, because of a likely increase in fly-tipping just moved the the bill for this would go to Horsham District Council. No saving in the spending of our council tax. It’s difficult to understand how two local councils, both Conservative-led, cannot manage even the most basic level of cooperation and partnership but thankfully the option has been closed.
