Lib Dems say: “Fix the Tips!”

Anyone who’s tried to use Horsham’s Hop Oast Recycling Site lately will know it’s been in complete chaos. Restricted opening hours have caused hour-long queues extending all the way up to the A24 roundabout. They frequently block the entrance to the Park & Ride.

Thanks to county councillor Kirsty Lord (Lib Dem Hassocks and Burgess Hill South) action is at last being taken. Conservative-led County Hall has accepted her suggestion to switch to summer timetables immediately, instead of waiting till 1st April.

The recycling service is struggling because of repeated attempts by the Conservatives to cut availability. They’re now experimenting with a new booking system at five sites in West Sussex, including Horsham. Residents will be required to book a slot in advance and only one visit per week will be allowed.

The reality is, recycling centres are an essential service. The more they try to cut, the more it costs us to deal with fly-tipping.

John Milne, Liberal Democrat candidate for Horsham Riverside said, ‘Clearly the situation for residents is intolerable and action needs to be taken urgently. They’re finally bringing in summer hours, but they need to roll out the booking system across the County immediately, along with other measures such as real-time queuing information.’

Fellow Liberal Democrat candidate Chris Geeson (Billingshurst) added ‘Reduced services because of Covid has caused serious increases in fly tipping and traffic bottlenecks, with people queuing for long periods at their local waste site, like mine in Billingshurst. The longer-term issue however is poor management of waste sites by the Conservatives at West Sussex.’

Liberal Democrat Cllr Kirsty Lord (Hassocks and Burgess Hill South) said “Conservative-controlled West Sussex County Council have been tinkering with the waste sites for years – introducing then removing charges for household waste, requiring identification for access, changing opening hours, and threatening the closure of two sites as part of this year’s budget. They need to stop tinkering and fix the tips once and for all.
