My name is Jay Mercer and I will be standing as your candidate in Horsham East for the Liberal Democrats in the West Sussex County Council elections in May.
I live in Monks Gate, just outside Horsham, with my wife and our 3 cats. We moved here over 16 years ago.
I worked as a teacher for eight years and then went on in local councils to progress to become Director of Education, firstly in West Berkshire and also in West Sussex. I am currently the chair of a charitable multi-academy trust of 15 special schools and the governor of a nearby local authority school. Having worked in local government most of my career, I have an in depth understanding of how councils work, particularly West Sussex, and what it takes to get things done.
I would dearly love to see a fairer, greener and more prosperous country, and I believe that this starts at a local level. People who believe local institutions treat them fairly and represent their needs are more likely to take a wider interest in our country and the world around us.
2020 was an incredibly difficult year for so many people, and we’re not clear of it yet. It’s easy at a time like this to turn inward and think simply of our own families and situation. But if anything positive has come out of the pandemic, it’s that we’ve seen, once again, how strong communities can be when people come together to help one another. We’ve also had a glimpse of how our country could become a greener, more sustainable place - and our planet certainly needs it.
So please join in with our precious local democracy - vote, persuade your family and friends to vote. And if anything I have said strikes a chord with you, please do offer your help, we would welcome you.
