Childcare prices rising sharply in Horsham area

22 Mar 2023

Liberal Democrat analysis of the Coram Childcare Report* shows a £600-£900 price jump since last year, for parents in the South East using 25 hours of childcare a week.

The figures show an average rise of £18.61 a week for children under 2, or £967.72 for the year.

For children over 2 the average rise is £11.70 a week, or £608.40 for the year.

Liberal Democrats said the figures showed the Conservatives are neglecting “cash-strapped young parents” who are seeing their income squeezed even more by the cost of living crisis. The party are calling for significant investment in childcare to ensure every parent has access to quality child care provision without breaking the bank.

Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Horsham, John Milne said:

“The huge increase in the price of childcare is hitting cash-strapped families who are already facing a cost of living crisis.

“The UK has some of the highest childcare costs in the world. Parents up and down the country are struggling to afford their nursery fees, while for others the crippling costs of childcare mean they simply can’t afford to return to work.

“The Liberal Democrats believe parents in Horsham deserve a fair deal with quality childcare provision for all. The government is underfunding childcare places and it’s pushing the whole system into crisis.”
