County Councillor Sam Raby calls for urgent safety improvements at Faygate Roundabout and launches new petition
West Sussex County Councillor Sam Raby has backed a new petition calling for urgent safety improvements at Faygate Roundabout on the A264, warning that the junction is ‘intimidating and unsafe’ for pedestrians, cyclists and bus users.
The junction is a critical route linking Faygate, Colgate and Kilnwood Vale, and an important access point for buses, employment and local services. However, the current road layout creates a significant barrier to walking, cycling and public transport use.
Launching the petition, WSCC Councillor Sam Raby (St. Leonard’s Forest) said:
“Every day, local residents must cross multiple lanes of fast-moving traffic on the A264 with no safe or controlled crossings. It is intimidating and unsafe for many people, including older residents, parents with pushchairs, children, and those with mobility difficulties. For many of these people, social mobility is reduced.”
Residents have reported that heavy traffic throughout the day, particularly during peak commuting hours, makes crossing extremely difficult and highly dangerous. The situation is further worsened by busy Saturday car boot sales, poor visibility from vegetation, and additional complexity introduced by the recently opened garage.
Councillor Raby added:
“Taking a bus to Faygate, from Crawley, means literally taking your life in your hands if you want to cross to Faygate, including heading towards the train station.”
Population growth in the surrounding area and concerns of Durrants Village residents have increased the urgency of the issue. There have been several serious incidents, including a fatal accident.
The petition calls on West Sussex County Council to take immediate action to deliver safe, controlled crossings at Faygate Roundabout.
