Horsham Liberal Democrats have launched a petition calling on Sussex Police to stop the street racing on the A264 and A24.
We call on Sussex Police and Katy Bourne, Police and Crime Commissioner, to take urgent action to stop organised car meets and reckless driving along the A264, A24, and in surrounding communities.
Residents in Southwater, Kilnwood Vale, Faygate and Colgate regularly report late-night gatherings where drivers engage in dangerous racing, burnouts, and drifting around local roundabouts. These events are often organised on social media and attract spectators who encourage reckless driving.
District Councillor Hannah Butler said:
"Despite over two years of work with Sussex Police and PCC Katy Bourne, anti-social driving and organised car meets on the A264 near Kilnwood Vale are escalating again."
A recent multi-vehicle accident on 13th March near the Hop Oast roundabout on the A264 has again highlighted the serious risks these activities pose to residents and road users.
Southwater Councillor Alex Jeffery commented:
"A local resident travelling south along the A24, toward the Hop Oast roundabout, was involved in Friday’s accident, describing it as ‘A truly frightening experience and (we) both feel lucky to come out unhurt."
County Councillor Sam Raby added:
"Residents in Colgate, over a mile away, can hear the revving of engines and screeching of tyres from drifting around roundabouts, with many residents of Kilnwood Vale, Faygate and Colgate fearful of using the A264 on Friday and Saturday evenings."
Liberal Democrat MP for Horsham, John Milne, commented:
"This activity and the groups responsible are well known by authorities, and attempts to date have failed to stop the root cause of the problem. I will again raise this issue with Sussex Police, to put an end to the dangerous, illegal and anti-social organised activities."
